TOGUSBABY
No one remembers the exact time or place, just that it always was, like warm beer or stale potato chips.
It started simple, a small organ in the back
corner of the basement; Aubrey Alexander plugged it in and just listened to it's hum.
Over twenty years later Aubrey still found himself banging out show tunes for blue haired old
ladies in whatever seedy venue would pay the rent. He doesn't wear sequins, peacock feathers,
or ruffled shirts;
he doesn't write pseudo-depressio-angsty songs or glitzy rock ballads.
His music is the reflection of his own heart; simple, elegant, uplifting. In a world of broken
bicycles sometimes all you want to do is ride.
People said I had a brilliant mind but that I never really felt inclined.
I hated school and the seventh grade. Both times.
Dropped out soon as I could do it
but that wasn't really when I quit.
but I'll be fine.

A Banshee Bug?
March 12th 2006
There was a problem with the bitrate in the version of Banshee I had posted live (no that wasn't my real voice). It made it play too slow and artifically deepened my voice. I have put a new version of this file online.

New Version of Bicycle
March 12th 2006
Here's a new version of Bicycle, about half the length. It could probably use a real bass and guitars. Like most songs, drums would be nice.

Jam in Bath
March 12th 2006
Had a jam session in Bath last night. Had a fun time. Although I played organ most of the night (which I haven't done for ages), I did play a few of my songs there such as CINJ. Seemed to go off well. Hope to do it again soon.

Throat Candy
December 07th 2005
Put up a new song last night. I'd really like to get some feedback on this. I think I like how it came together.
Is it too different?

In New Jersey
November 20th 2005
Spent this weekend in New Jersey, the song that is. Saturday I did a new version of the song based on a few of the great suggestions you've been sending in. Tried to make it a little tighter, has a little less deadspace, and I played it a step lower. I updated it yesterday and replaced it with the live version.
Well, you spoke up and based on your new feedback, I've done a best of both worlds version. This version is just piano, and eventually I'll record the other tracks. Take a listen.

A Blue Fish
November 13th 2005
Sorry Ted for putting up a bad version of Blue Fish. :(
I'll do better next time.
In other news, if you hover over most song links, it gives additional infomation on the song. As I replace more of the site with the new song linking code, songs will be the correct color.

I like Blink
November 12th 2005
Do you think it'd be better to have this as just accoustic piano or should it rock? I'm thinking both.

Monkey In The Triangle
November 11th 2005
I put up a horrible sounding version of Monkey in the Triangle tonight. Please remind me not to put this stuff up until it doesn't suck so bad.

A Day Too Wrong
November 10th 2005
I was told tonight that the version of A Day Too Long lacked lyrics. I was pretty sure I recorded lyrics (however badly) so was shocked to see they were not on the song on the site. I've reuploaded a new song. Check it out and tell me it was better when the lyrics weren't there. :P

Togus Visits the Blogosphere
November 08th 2005
In order to give you the total experience, we've added a blog. This'll keep you up to date on the depressing process of putting out a cd.
Arn't you happy?
Splash!
Ok, did I jump off a bridge? No. Plans have changed. I'll probably still go down to Wedu, but I
really want to have a better vision of my music first. As soon as I close out this latest
coding gig I'm working on I am probably going to buy a Presonus Firepod. Then I'll be able
to do fairly good quality recordings from home.
My nephews were over this weekend and they poked me about getting this CD out. I realized I
was getting a bit behind, so I talked with them about my music. Asked them what they liked
best for a song of mine, and they just started quoting lyrics. It's kind of cool to hear somebody
else memorizing lines you wrote. Thanks, Justin.
I need to update the site more, huh? Next time you see me, please kick me in the balls.
Recording Update
Got together with DJwingnut the other day and he dropped off his Roland VM-1300Pro
and I've been using it to make some recordings. Ben and I took a trip to
Brunswick and he bought me an XLR cable and we ate ice cream and burgers.
Mic Update
Just ordered a new mic. Its 1" diameter, 6 micron thick diaphragm delivers high sensitivity
and detailed recordings. Wired with Mogami wire for added clarity. Balanced, transformerless
output for low noise. Encased in a heavy-duty brass enclosure. 30Hz-20kHz frequency response.
Cardioid pickup pattern. Includes spider shockmount. This should be nice.
I also dug an old WalMart headphone/mic out of the closest and used it to record a new version
of Bicycle in the Basement
. It's not
done, but it's a decent concept, especailly for being put together with literally no music equipment
beyond my keyboard and me. I'll re-do all of this when I get into the studio. The great part is
I can let them listen to this first and maybe select better equipment.
In other news, I think I am totally crushing on Regina Spektor. She's totally going to influence where I go
musically over the next year.
Song Database Online!
This makes me so happy! All the songs are now available via database, and attached to the same song development system I use as my backend.
So as I make and release new songs, once they reach a certian status they will automatically
appear on the website. Cool, no?
I've had some requests for more lyrics, so I'll try to get those up and online as soon as I can.
Thanks for Checking Us Out!
Even though the site has only been online for a weekend, we've seen
nearly 100 unique visitors so far. Thanks. :)
This definately makes me feel good about putting out this CD. I
promise to get some high-quality, full length MP3s on the CD as soon
as I can. *crosses fingers*
Hidden What?
To tide you over I hid a track on the website somewhere. Start hovering! (or viewing source) :P
I'll give you a hint. When you fist visit the site, hover over the words "ruffled shirts". Let me know if you find anything.
I Need A Mic!
I hope this doesn't come off as unprofessional, just realisitic--I
need a microphone I can use to record some scratch vocals. I had
an SM57 and SM58 when I was in Akron, but they were stolen when
my place was robbed. If anybody has anything I can borrow, great.
If not, I'll just end up buying one as soon as I can. aubrey@togusbaby.comIf you can
help out, thanks!Streaming MP3 Player Online
John Oakes from Mediasketch sent us
our beautiful new streaming MP3 player addition for our website today. It's pretty
snazzy.
We've put up a snippet of a couple songs Togusbaby put together in
2002 in a home studio. Remember, this is not the sound or anything we're recording
for the new CD. This is just an example of things we've done in the past, on home equipment,
and the stuff we'll have on here soon will blow this literally out of the water.
Mostly I just put this up here to test the MP3 player. :)
Click to read about Over and Over
(from the Grow Up Trilogy)
and
Banshee
and to listen with the new MP3 player -- just click the play button.
More to come soon as
we land in the studio.
Togus Does Wedu
March 5th is the date I drive down to Manchester, NH to use the beautiful studios at
WeduAudio. They've got some great soundproof rooms there and
I'll be sitting down with an old friend of mine from Maine (who might just lay a track or two of bass down on the CD)
so it should go great. I'm really looking forward to hearing how clean we can mix it up, and to record some quality
vocals using the best equipment their money can buy.Eric Shepherd 'Rides'
Eric Shepherd of Vinegar Tom will be playing drums on the Togusbaby release. Shipping in digital signals of his
performace, Eric and Aubrey will take several takes of each song over the Internet. Then during the final mixing,
Eric will send up very large digital audio files that we can mix and master at the studio. It's just like having
him here, except for the lack of that awful smell.Aubrey Comes Back to Maine
Yes, its true! Aubrey is back from Akron. Some people said he had a hard time there, others say he was bored.
No matter what it was, we're all glad to have him back here in New England and can really hear in his songs that he
grew there a lot, for better for worse--but it sounds great!
